Presently,
the Foundation provides its services through one of four programs:
1.
Developing The Dream
An
elementary based program aimed at teaching rhythm and coordination.
It is one of several programs available that begins with kindergarten
students and is designed to grow along with young children to keep
the richness of the arts available to them. Our elementary programs
range from rhythm and coordination for K-3, which includes our Marching
Days Program with support from our high school band members, to
the current development of a basic movement class and music exposure/instructional
assistance for grades 4-6. Basic movement classes include several
different dances, including The Swing and a basic Charleston, and
the musical exposure/instructional assistance will begin during
the traditional school year 2002/2003.
2.
Make It Happen
A junior and senior high school based performing arts program
that operates on the bases of a production company. Designed for
the serious minded performing arts student, it introduces them to
the professional side of entertainment. It incorporates the importance
of other disciplines such as visual art and engineering in delivering
its objectives. The junior high and high school program gives young
adults the opportunity to explore Johnson's musical talent, as well
as giving them insight on the many aspects of the entertainment
industry. At the present time there are 14 original scored Johnson
pieces that have been arranged for high school level band play.
Along with these
school programs The JPJ Foundation also has its own 8-piece youth
jazz band and will reform its 6-member dance troupe during calendar
2003. Auditions are held yearly for open positions to all area high
school students 16 years or older, with a commitment time of 18
months. During this period of time, we guarantee at least 5 performances,
including a three-part concert series, along with participation
at some of the local Jazz and community Festivals. Our bands have
performed at the Riverside downtown Wednesday nights, the Riverside
Arts Foundation brown bag series and the Inland Empire Jazz and
Art Festival.
3.
Johnson Archive Collection
Created to preserve and make available to students, scholars
and the country, the historic value and vast musical legacy of the
Father of Stride Piano. The focus of the program is primarily on
restoration of the Johnson musical catalog, preservation and exhibition
of Johnson's music, work papers and memorabilia, etc.
Through community
based programming, The JPJ Foundation also works with other non-profit
organizations to supplement classroom and after school artistic
development sessions and public performances.
4.
Artists In Residency
This program was designed to bring the professional side of
entertainment to the youth for learning purposes. We are in our
fifth year of partnership with two local, though world renowned
musicians: Gary Bias (saxophonist for Earth, Wind, & Fire) &
Dio Saucedo (performed with George Benson).
